Fortunately, preparing for hysteroscopy is simple. It’s best to schedule your hysteroscopy for the week after your period ends. This is when your uterine lining is thin, which makes it easier to view. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen, an hour before your appointment to ease cramping.
Wear comfortable clothing, and avoid tampons, douches, or vaginal medications for 24 hours beforehand. Tell our team about any medications you take. Some blood thinners may need a dosage adjustment first. If we discuss using sedation, you’ll need to arrange for a ride home.
A thin, lighted scope called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. A sterile solution gently expands the uterine cavity, providing a clear view of the lining.
Most hysteroscopies take 15 to 30 minutes and are performed in our office. You may feel some cramping similar to menstrual pain, but most patients tolerate the procedure well with local anesthesia or mild sedation. If your Ideal Gynecology provider spots a fibroid or polyp, we often remove it on the spot.
Our team reviews the findings with you and explains what they mean for your health. If the hysteroscopy finds fibroids, endometriosis, or another condition, we'll walk you through your treatment options, including medication or procedures such as an endometrial ablation.
If any tissue was removed during the procedure, we send it to a lab for further testing. We'll follow up with the results, answer any questions, and guide you through the next steps.
Hysteroscopy recovery is quick for most of our patients. You can expect mild cramping and light spotting for a day or two afterward. Rest for the remainder of the day, and skip strenuous exercise until the cramping subsides.
Avoid intercourse, tampons, and swimming for about a week, or as long as our team recommends, to lower your infection risk. Most of our patients are back to their normal activities within a day. Call our office if you experience heavy bleeding, fever, or severe pain, since these symptoms need immediate attention.
